I agree with Shirindo. I fully understand that you want to be able to fight on the ground, if it comes to that, but I would prefer not going to the ground. Karate's submission moves involve standing (some involve putting the opponent halfway, or all the way, to the ground). Much better if you don't willingly go to the ground. Too many variables at that point. Better to put the guy down, hit/kick him to stun him if you have to, and get out of there, in my opinion.
