Hi all, i just wanted to pose a question to you. I have a very weak right knee. It dislocates at the slightest movement. But i am very interested in martial arts. Is there any type that i can do where i can use my upper body? It seems to be where all of my strength lies anyway.

Hi Evie, and thank you so much for posting your opinion. I never thought of that. I was leaning towards Karate but there is too much leg movement there. Doctor has me going for Aquathrapy next month. I will ask him about the Tai Chi. Thanks again

I need some clarification. What do you mean by dislocate? Does your patella (Knee cap) slide from side to side or do the long bones (Tibia & femur) separate?
Is this a result of an acute injury or is this just something that's always been there? Depending on the severity of the dislocation you may want to stay away from the arts. However if you do decide to participate, it's not so much the style that is important, it is your instructor that really matters. It's not no pain no gain... It's no BRAIN no gain ![]() Something you may want to explore is Muscle Activation Therapy http://www.muscleactivation.com/main.html It's great for preventing dislocations! |

There is almost no condition that precludes all martial arts. If your knee dislocates easily, work with an art like Tai Chi that doesn't focus on rapid leg movements. Aikido might also be a good choice, depending on how your knee dislocates. Just be sure you talk to a physician as well as the instructor of your class. If the instructor knows your capabilities, he/she will be able to modify your training to meet your needs. Yamashita-Sensei has taught a blind woman, a gentleman with Downs Syndrome, and many people with varying levels of physical disabilities and injuries.
