I think you got it right on the head. So many things effect this question. Ego makes me want to say western though.

i wanted to revive this topic. as i hope you know by now, we are having a contest to win one of Bruce Lee's books, so i thought it would be nice to continue some good points that were made on this thread. the one that particularly caught my attention is whether JKD is a personal style or a new martial arts style.

although Bruce Lee did not want it to become a formalized school because he did not want the style to stagnate or stop evolving, i would argue that it was meant to be more than a personal style. he did want to pass on what he had learned and he did believe that he had the best style availible, but i think he wanted the art to continue on and grow and evolve past his own life and his own fame. thus i would say that it is its own martial arts style.

jeet kune do is not a style, it is a concept.

and jun fan gung fu (the actual "jeet kune do" that is "taught") shouldn't have a country behind classifying its style.... it's just simply, bruce lee's fighting style. and since bruce lee was a chinese american, it's a chinese american style..... and not a chinese style and not an american style.

although i do agree that it is an over simplification to say any style is a "country x"'s style..... but speeking as a forum administrator, those categories are convenient, and you do tend to get a lot of flack about how you classify it...... more so than any MA.

further, you could argue that all MAs at there base are only concepts and not styles... but most MAs don't have such a strong distinction between the movements and the philosophy like Bruce Lee's MA.

I'm going to point out that you answered "Jeet Kun Do" in the "what is your favorite style" thread.

because it's the only style that isn't a style... therefore being all styles.

jeet kune do is personal expression, therefore, it's my one and only style if i were to name one... although it's not a style.

Ah! In that case, you have come up with the only answer that isn't an answer. Therefore, you are disqualified.

no way.... MMA has become merely muay thai and BJJ. there is little else mixed in. IMO, MMA has become a style. how often do you really see any other MA in MMA?
