Naginata-do is the way of the naginata, a polearm that was used primarily by Samurai women and monks.
I would study Yagyu Shinkage Ryu swordsmanship in a ultra traditional school and live there for about 20 years.

The naginata is, as sirdarling said, a Japanese polearm.
The blade is forged in a method similar to a katana blade, and has a similar curve (which is to say that, depending on the maker, it might have nearly no curve or a sweeping curve.) It is used in graceful strokes, and was feared even by well-trained samurai, due to its reach, which could be used to reach past a threatening katana to cripple the samurai. It was for this reason that monastaries and homesteads were not taken all too likely, as a monk or samurai's wife might end a career with a single swing of the weapon.
