Default First MA Bias

question...

does everyone think the first MA they learn is the best?

and what causes that bias if they do?

Thats not the case for me. I look at the first MA I studied as a starting point, but not the best. However it was a great form, and helped me to realize where I wanted to go with my MA.

I dont feel like any MA that I have studied is better than any others. But I do think that for many people, the first MA that most people take is the one that really puts martial arts in their lives, so it may make them a little bias.

what? no one here thinks they unfairly prefer the first MA they practiced? personally i first studied hapkido seriously, and that will forever be my "main" art and i am more likely to recommend it than any other style. and i am (unfortunately) less likely to see as many of the flaws with the system as the other systems.

My first MA I ever studied was Aikido.

Since then I have done Tang Soo Do, Kickboxing, Judo, Karate (Shotokan & Sheisinki), Cali, Thai-Bo (jk ) and Ju-Jutsu. The art I have the most fun doing is the JJ but I still have respect for all the arts I've done.

I think that it depends on the person. It's a cheesy answer, but I think it's still true. Some people just stick with the first thing they see, hear, or experience as "this is the ultimate truth" of a given subject.

i think of it as more of a sentimental attachment. and because it is the base that you use as your comparison to all other arts, you see what other arts lack.... mostly because what is lacking usually stands out more than other aspects.

but you must a little.... your profile says you know TKD and HKD. if you took TKD first it means you choose HKD after, obviously..... but HKD and TKD are very similar in many respects. so it would appear that you have a preference for more traditional angular hard MAs.

the reason i ended up taking HKD... it's a funny story really.

i was lookin around for MA schools.... then i saw the korean martial arts school. the description was that it was hapkido, taekwondo, judo and kumsuldo. the whole aspect of many different arts intrigued me and i wanted to go watch a class to see how it was like first. when i went there, my mom and i went in to master park's office... and before even watching a class or making a decision... i was somehow signed up for hapkido... i'm not quite sure what happened... but then after that i just kept goin there because i didn't wanna just quit right away... that'd make me look bad.

i'm glad i went there tho cuz i learned some useful techniques. but i'm also glad i was kinda made to quit, because that frees me up a lot more.
