Karate is by traditionally a "Striking" art... it's Okinawan/Ryukyu island origin, was a combination of Chinese Kempo, and traditional Japanese fighting styles. It does make use of many locks, throws, and grappling techniques, however that is not its base. In the early to mid 20th century it had a strong influance on modern taekwondo, due to the Japanese Occupation of Korea in the early 20th century. It was meant to be a "final" way of defense, when no other option was available.
Judo ( a branch of Akido) was formed in the 19th century. Its primary function is to hinder or disable the opponent, using a series of throws, and grappling techniques. It is by definition, the "Gentle Way". Judo, does have some striking, however it is mostly practiced in Kata.
Judo was meant as a way to defend without causing your opponent serious, or permanent harm. It is also on of the world most widely practiced arts.
