Default The difference?

How are karate and Judo different? What makes them different to each other and other main types of martial arts like kick boxing?

The main focus of karate is to deal with an attack through evasive body movements and blocking, and counter attack using kicks, punches and strikes. Joint locks, restraints and takedowns are also used, but to a lesser extent. This compares with judo and aikido which depend mainly on throws and restraints, or taekwondo which places more emphasis on kicking than karate. It?s not a case of any one art being better than any other ? each one just takes a different approach. Because of this, different arts suit different people.

So really one is more contact than the other?

And more contact sports suit some people and not others i guess.

Thankyou for the information there.

do you do either of those types of sports yourself?

i wouldnt call it more or less contact than the other, but more of a "different contact" between the two

Isnt the aim of Judo to get the person on to the ground, similar to wrestling in some respects.

Whilst karate the aim is to get a direct hit on the person?

Judo is more focused on throws, whereas karate is more focused on blows.

The main difference in styles is "how" the same things are done. The goal is essentially the same, but the path to acheive the goals are different.

In my understanding, Karate is a defencive martial art, all about evades and blocks, then counter attacks of both puches and kicks.
In contradiction Judo is all about throws and tackles. It focuses heavily on taking your aponant to the ground, and then keeping them there in holds.

Then there is kickboxing, which was once described to me as being "street karate" basically meaning its a rough and ready version of karate.
Which isnt that far from the truth, allot of the techniques in KB are directly from karate.

I have to agree with that. Karate is mostly centered around defensive moves and rarely did I learn many throws. I have never had the chance to study Judo but from what I have seen there is far more physical attacks than karate. I did a quick search and found this site. Judo info

Hello All - In reading your posts concerning (Karate) Which, i believe you mean a "Hard Style" - Like Shotokan, for example? Most of you stated that Karate is mostly Punching and kicking, with little Grappling methods involved!?

And the reason that you all believe, or think that, is because your (Sensei) was not taught the correct technique(applications) that are in your "Hard Style Katas" It is not His, or Her Falt, because their Sensei probably was never taught the True Technique Applications either! There Are A Whole Bunch of Grappling Techniques With In Your Kata's - You just have to find a Teacher that can open up that Door
