Default About Judo

The history of the Japanese martial art Judo: Named from the Chinese "gentle way" this is an unarmed form of combat. Similar to Aikido which was formed from the soft style techniques Jujitsu. The point of Judo is to throw the opponent cleanly, master him by applying pressure to the arm or neck, or pin him. Most techniques teach how to use the opponents force to your advantage.

I have always been interested in judo but have not had the time to research it a little more. I have sat in one class before and was impressed at the techniques taught against an opponent. It is very different from the karate I studied.

I suppose like many people i got more interested in the grappling arts after watching the UFC,i tried different grappling clubs first Freestyle Wrestling which i enjoyed which was great for take downs, but there was no submisions only pins.

Then i see a Krav Maga club advertised and see that the instructor was also training in Gracie Jujitsu this really got me interested in joining his club,he was a very good instructor aswell, was also a judo blackbelt.

This was my first experience of submision techniques,it was all new to me as ide never done Judo before.

About a year later i joined a Gracie Jujitsu club, the instructor was brilliant and even the blue belts seem to be very good at grapling on the ground.

The more i started reading about different grappling styles i looked up a tradtional Judo club, that teached old style which practiced alot of ground techniques like Graci Jujitsu, infact it was very much the same except in the Judo we also practiced the many throws.

I think if you can find a traditional Judo club, you can learn so much more, they even practice leglocks in some tradition styles of Judo.

Judo is a great art.

I haven't gotten into grappling a lot. Instead I veered off into armed combat and with that it sucked up a lot of time. If I wanted to master a couple of weapons I don't think I would ever get around to grappling so I plan to make time for it sometime this year.

I will second what Bruce Van Dumb is saying.

My main art is kung fu (Pigua Quan) Not having a shuai jiao (chinese wrestling) school near by and not sure they do ground work anyway. I elected to take up Judo to make me more complete.

Most Judo schools/clubs also practice Judo as a martial art. Judo has all the same katame waza (grappling techniques) as jujitsu. Judo (not sport judo) focus more on Nage waza (throwing) than jujitsu (jujitsu focus more on the Katame waza)......that is all....At most Judo clubs or schools you will have judoka that practice the sport of judo and some who practice the martial art of Judo...then some do both..(like me)

My dad got his black belt in Judo back in the late 60s. He really liked it, unfortunatley he moved and was unable to continue his training at that school. What he learned had really enhanced the other martial arts that he studied.

I don't mean to nit-pick here, but Traditional Aikido Methods(techniques), came mostly from the Martial Art of Kendo, and also from the Style of Aiki-jujutsu - The O'Sensei Founded the Style of Aikido in 1945, in which, most of the (kyusho) was removed, and the (harmony with your fellow man was put in). Which changed the Fine Art of Traditional Aikido into Modern Aikido

Aikido is derived from Daito-ryu Aiki jujustu.... it was founded by Morihei Ueshiba (Osensie), and was developed, based on his Philosophical beliefs (tao). Akiido is a tactical blend of energy and movement... Its connection to Kendo only applies to the philosophy (tao), not the fighting style.

And yes Kendo is the one with the "Bamboo Stick things" (Kendo simply put it "The way of the sword")

Aikido was created from an unarmed art, as Doc said.
However, there is a link to kendo (actually, more kenjutsu) that goes beyond philosophy. The founder of aikido realized that many, if not all, of the movements made with a sword translated into excellent movements made when directing an opponent's body around. Essentially, in the same way that you swing/pull a sword in order to cut an enemy, you may also swing/pull an enemy to bring him to the ground. This is why many aikido schools also practice with swords.
