I am aching so bad. I just got back from another of Yamashita-Sensei's seminars. This time, I did the double-header, with empty-hand last night and tonfa this morning.
Empty hand was, as always, focused on his own style, called Suikendo (Way of the Wave Fist), and was a combination of strikes, blocks and takedowns. It was basically two hours of intensive partner training, which really rocked. This morning, we focused on a pretty basic tonfa kata, but it was still a lot of fun. We also got a great lecture on personal health.

Suikendo is something that he came up with. It utilizes karate, but it also uses some very fluid motions. The basis is to flow like water, using minimal energy and putting yourself a step ahead of your opponent by not stopping moving until you've escaped/defeated your opponent.

It actually seems more like kung fu than aikido. There is some aikido or jiujitsu in the style, but I think that the majority of the fluidity comes from an internal Chinese style (remember that Matayoshi-Sensei spent time in China, and Yamashita-Sensei seems to take very heavily after him)
