also while trying to apply a technique you should be in control of your attacker take there centre to keep them off balance and keep them moving a good martial art that does this is aikido its worth a look but any MA can include this form of control.. anyone can throw a punch or kick but apply a control technique in a real life situation and not have to break the other person to get them to leave you alone is what i would call mastering your art...
