I agree that it varies by school and style. It also varies on the person, some people will catch on faster. Also, life happens-there may be times when someone needs to take some time off due to reasons such as work, illness, family and so on.
I do have to say that on average it would be about 3-5 years. Once again, that all depends.

WTF.... any mcdojo will give you a black belt in 5 or less years, which is a joke ... however as far as Karate is concerned, in modern schooling, you do need to complete certain Kata's, and test for every advancing level.....

This will anger a few people, however most of the "Black Belts" I see coming out of Dojo's these days, have so much more to learn before I would consider there BB status....

Dis! That's very cynical of you!!

I have to be honest and say I have no idea as to how long it takes in Karate but it took me 6 years to get mine in Ju Jutsu and that was after a previous 10 years of MA training in other styles.

I felt that I had graded to quickly as I honestly believe that there should be improvement shown between each and every grade. Also when you start getting towards the higher belts, I feel that the student should begin to at least assist in the running of the dojo. I have deliberately not said 'teach' as not everyone who is competent has the knack of teaching.

me cynical??? no way what can i say, my user name suits me

Shirindo you made a very very good point about teaching. i wish more people understood that as i have had some poor instructors teach class.... but i do believe that everyone in the class should teach occationally, it helps you learn the techniques better. i have had a fun muay thai class where we got into groups and everyone had to teach two techniques to the group. it was very beneficial for everyone involved!
