i have not seen any aikido techniques that would help you on the ground, but there are plenty that would stop it from going to the ground. once it does go to the ground, i know a couple of hapkido moves, but i do not know if there is anything similar in aikido. if they are sitting on your chest you can wrap you legs around their chest and pull them down. if they are on top of you you can raise your hips and throw them off balance then roll over and get on top of them (this is actually also a BJJ move).... but you are a little limited with ground techniques.

Position means everything when your opponent is stronger than you. Aikido teaches you to redirect their energy to place them where you want them to be.

Aikido is definately not a grappling based art. As previously mentioned, there are many techniques used to stop someone taking us to the ground, but we do have some techniques that would certainly help if we are brought to the ground in restraining someone or getting out of a situation to get back up to our feet.

Although difficult to do, and takes a very long time to get competent at, I have been able to use both Ikkyo, and Nikkyo from my back to create space and roll over to pin my partner. We also use space and distancing techniques. Aikido is quite limited in its ground defense, but we do have a couple tricks, lol.
Being on top, one could use Ikkyo, Nikkyo, Yonkyo, pretty much any of the immobilizations. Dont get me wrong, If I was purely aikido, I dont think I would want to willingly go to the ground with a grappler |

I have done quite a bit of ground work and im only if im lucky at my heaviest ten stone and have beat guys on the ground that are 13stone up the key to ground work is body movement and to stay relaxed dont fight the other person because you will use to much energy and tire you have to use your angles and try to think one or two steps ahead of your opponent nearly most wrist locks will work arms locks / bars and dont forget if someone has you in the full mount in other words sat on your waist there legs outside yours one good sneaky trick is to dig the heel of your foot which ever one into the top of there calf and raise your hips to put all your weight on it the pain will be enough to get them off and give you an opening.....

I would say the key is to be pliable and when on the ground never stop moving just dont give the other person time to settle and same as stand up keep them off balance.. because even when on the ground you have a centre or central balance point..
