Question Aikido?

Hi, i am not sure if i spelled that right. Anyway, my husband is facinated by ai kido and i was wondering if that is the sort of thing he should get into when he has a problem with his back.

It's tough to recommend any specific activity for someone with chronic back problems, but I would think that Tai Chi might pose less of a risk than other martial arts.

Hi again Chip. Thanks for the response. I will pass that on to him. He has always loved that style every since he saw Steven Segal's first movie. It is very impressive. I myself find that there is one style of dance fighting that really interests me, i don't remember the name of it.

Aikido maynot fit him with his back as the ground level is learning how to fall, roll, tumble.....

TaiJi (Tai Chi is the best course for him....unless he does a rooted Karate, one where there is no bending

i would ask his doctor what they think..... keep in mind that the goal of aikido is to stop an enemy without hurting them... it is all about the redirection on energy and not brute force. the flowing movements are ideal for people with health concerns...... but like they said there is a lot of falling and rolling involved. i have many back problems too and i do a lot of falling and rolling. personally i find that i have the most problems with my back when i try to avoid activities that use my back. i think it is because to improve your back you have to build muscle and thus that means a lot of movments involving the back. so don't be too quick to discount activity due to back problems, but make sure you consult a doctor.

Definitely talk to a doctor, but I think that aikido would be good. As far as arts that involve throwing, aikido is a gentle art.
Also, perhaps have him talk to the instructor, and they can maybe work out an alteration to the training to work on building his back muscles.

Absolutely agree, no reason why Aikido should not be suitable though just because of the back.

The dance style you might be thinking of could be capoiera. A brazilian style of fighting that involves music, singing, clapping and of course the 'jinga', lol.

Best of luck to you both.

Hello - It would depend on What the back problem is? But, your Husband should see a Doctor before he does anything It, also depends on what Style of Aikido that is in your area If He wants to learn the Aikido that Steven Segal Does - He will be Hard Pressed to find the Same Aikido.
Steven Segal's Aikido, involves Kyusho (pressure point attacking), which is almost nonexistent these days! He will probably find a "Modern" Aikido Dojo, which has lost its "Self-Defense" Aspects, but would be great exercise. But, if your Husband finds a Traditional Aikido Style, or a Aiki-Jujutsu Style, then he will be in luck
The Difference between Modern Aikido, and Traditional Aikido is, in Modern Aikido the Uke Laughs when being thrown. In Traditional Aikido, the Uke Screams when taken down!

Yes Sir; It is actually a "Traditional" Aikido Style, because of the (kyusho-pressure point attacking) that you see him do in his movies. Whare as, Modern Aikido has removed the Striking Elements!

Master Segal; Actually ran his own Aikido Dojo in Japan for some time - Now, if you can operate an Aikido Dojo in Japan, you have too be Good
