Default 3 Reasons you would use submission fighting

To Hold - restrain a subject

To Control - force your subject to move toward an intentional opening

To Finish - cause destruction to joints, muscles, and other vital areas; to cause lack of conscienceness; to cause enough pain to force subject to willfully submit.

im not a big fan of hurting people, but i will if i have to, i would give them the option of giving up once they are not in control and move on

my oldest brother uses submission wrestling holds nearly every day, he's a US Marshall and responsible for controlling and transporting prisoners who are often pretty rowdy.

I grew up with submission fighting because everything else got you in trouble. If you punched another kid you were in big trouble but if you just held him until the teacher came it was ok. I guess that just moved on to adulthood.

You cannot use submission in a lot of places, like a bar or parking lot. While you are holding him, his buddy will come up and hit you from behind. One on one, okay. But who fights fair anymore? They like to jump you in a gang.

Or just shoot you.

yeah i agree and i think that is the major down sdie of grappling. ideally i think that you should stay on your feet, but if you do go down it is good to know what to do.

i agree with what 191125 said about getting in less trouble though. it does look less violent.

Why does submission wreestling mean you have to be on the ground?

I have many techniques I use that would get a submission with both of us standing. Better to move them between me and his buddies that way too.

I agree with Shirindo. I fully understand that you want to be able to fight on the ground, if it comes to that, but I would prefer not going to the ground. Karate's submission moves involve standing (some involve putting the opponent halfway, or all the way, to the ground). Much better if you don't willingly go to the ground. Too many variables at that point. Better to put the guy down, hit/kick him to stun him if you have to, and get out of there, in my opinion.

Good point, I guess I would consider it to be anything that uses pain from joint locks to convince an attacker that they have better things to do than attack you. I wonder, however, based on a few things that I've read, if it means something else.
