i do agree with your point on a push for more of a sporting role. never the less i still think that ground fighting is a valuable tool that should not be overlooked, its fun and a great work out, it is also reassuring to know you have the ability to get back to your feet if you are taken down, but usually i take the fight to the ground, grappling seems to be instinctive to me.

You're definitely right that ground fighting should not be ignored, but I've met GJJ students who eschew learning stand-up fighting. They refuse to understand that, if their target doesn't want to engage in a ground fight, they have to pass through striking range before they get close enough to try and bring a fight to the ground. Doable, but far easier if you have an understanding of both.
I wouldn't even care if these same people didn't claim that they knew the ultimate self-defense art. Going to the ground doesn't help you at all if you're being attacked by more than one person.

i am commenting a little late.... internet is still not working and i am an internet nomad right now trying to find a internet conection whereever i can

i have to agree that he has got us with the Gracie's.... and i truely hate to admitt you are right because i dislike them a lot! not quite as revolutionary as bruce lee but right up there!

iwas trying to find out were i heard this from but i cant seem to remember but i still think you would like it and it fits this posting.

lol that is funny. good point too. BJJ really lacks stricking. even when they go to the ground they do not strick enough.
