Move to a flatter city?

Actually, I used to bike everywhere, and I'm trying to get into the habit again. Last year I biked to work, going something like fifteen or more miles. It was fun, but difficult. My dad used to bike fifteen miles to work every day it wasn't raining.
I'm hoping to get a job closer to me so that I can bike/walk everyday, as it's becoming less and less worthwhile to drive to work.

i find that it is really hard to find a good city bike in north america. they are always focused on mountain bike and that sort of thing.

Yeah, everybody wants to think that they are an outdoors-person, which is BS. Most people with a mountain bike have never been on anything rougher than a gravel path.
The one good thing, at least around here, is that there always seems to be someone selling an old Raleigh racer. These things can be fixed up with about an hour's work and they run great.

Come down to MN and visit, we have billions of city bikes down here for good prices, like about $100-$300 used. Or you can get specialty frames and stuff and ring up a $2,000 bike that weighs the same as a postage stamp and rides like you are biking on a cloud.

Due to my size I am putting city tires on a mountain bike frame and running like that. I am going to be biking halfway to work this summer and fall... busing with my son to his daycare then biking about 2 or 3 miles to work and back to his daycare every day.

Out of curiosity, sirdarling, where have you seen city bikes for sale? I've been to a couple of bike shops, and only see the heavier-framed ones. I know that they've got to be selling them somewhere, because I'll periodically see someone riding a new one, but I've never actually been in a shop that sells them.

Edit: Of course, now that I think about it, the bike shops I've been in have all been in the suburbs, while any bike shops you've been in, if you've ever been in a bike shop, would have been in the middle of a big city.
