i would think that joint manipulation is better in those situations than grappling

well that's kinda what i meant. but in order to perform joint manipulation techniques, wouldn't you be grappling in a sense? or do i just have the completely wrong idea for the term? lol

Different people define grappling in different ways. I consider anything where one combatant is purposefully trying to maintain a hold on the other to be grappling. There are different types of grappling (for example, joint manipulation vs bear hug), just like there are different types of striking (pressure point strikes vs haymaker)

The way I see it, joint manipulation is an aspect of grappling, though not all grappling is joint manipulation.
It's kind of like shapes. A square is a particular kind of rectangle. Not all rectangles are squares.
