There's some really good stuff in there. I've seen similar in other arts.
On the other hand, there's some pretty poor moves in there as well. Anything where your feet leave the ground for any length of time is relying on your opponent to not do anything untoward, like slam you into a wall or drop you to the ground. Even an untrained opponent can accidentally pull off an effective move, so simple is almost always better when it comes to self defense. I also have a personal problem with training to slit someone's throat after you've disarmed them. It may be a tactically sound move, but I believe that, in the end, it only increases the need for self defense, as it is an escalation of violence. If people know that their potential targets are more likely to kill them, they'll just strike more violently from the beginning.

As I said, personal preference.
The disarms we learn in karate are followed up by a step back, putting us out of reach, with the understanding that we can, if the need arises, turn the knife on the attacker. My problem with learning the other way around is that, in the middle of an adrenaline rush, you are more likely to turn to training than thought, and, most of the time, a guy who has lost his weapon is pretty much harmless, as he is too much of a coward to face his own knife.

good point never thought of that.... i guess that is something to think about, especially because we had a couple of SDs that caused the person to stab themself

i would say you have to take in the context of why you are training, for sure i would not want to slit a persons throat just for slitting his/her throat, removing the weapon from the equation should be the goal, i think people go to the extreme for one reason or another.well anyways i am glad to see that we can have a good discussion without anyone getting upset.
from what i gather about this art it is the Russian form of combatives so it was probably developed much like the combatives i learned, you had your essentials and then you have what someone thought was cool, throw it in the pot and every so often a new flavor gets added. it is also unit driven aswell.

I understand that in the origin of the art, a slit throat would be seen as necessary. "Elite forces" around the world trained with similar intent. US had a group of people who were trained in makeshift guerrilla warfare who were dedicated to messing with Nazi Germany's supply and intelligence lines. Their R&D developed this nasty weapon they dubbed "the smatchet" or "smashing hatchet". The thing was kind of like a trowel blade. It was sharp, but heavy enough to carry it through a German helmet. There was nothing pleasant about this. It was meant to brutally kill an armored man without needing to fire a gun (which would be extremely loud).
