Capoeira is brilliant fun but absolutely exhausting. I studied it in Cambridge but when I did it the emphasis was on learning everything so not only were we taught the movements and fighting aspects but we also learnt the instruments for the jogo such as bongos and the birambau. Totally facinating!

are the instruments purely for music or are they used as weapons too?

Purely for the music. The music is important as it sets the pace for "the game" (the fight) plus it makes you feel like a complete part of the group
