Default If the great philosophical and strategical minds could get together and debate

What if Sun Tzu, Musashi Miyamoto, Tokugawa Ieyasu, Sima Yi, etc... were together, in the same room, talking about whatever came to mind? They never really leave a train of thought, it just keeps skipping the tracks. Things will start with one quote. The next post will begin with a quote from another great mind. This followup quote should relate in some way to the previous quote, along with (perhaps) an explanation of how this quote relates. The quote can be a positive or a negative to the original quote, it doesn't matter. Just try to tie them together.

Try and keep the quotes having something to do with the martial arts, though they don't have to be Eastern. (They can even come from fictional media, but there has to be something to the quote).

"The only use of (martial arts) is self defense." Ki Lo Ni, the Great Teacher

Is Master Tsu's statement in support of or against the Great Teacher's statement?

In a way it is both....

A great warrior knows he can attack and win.. however, a master knows how to win without fighting....

It shows that Martial arts can be both aggressive, and defensive, however the latter is preferred.

It also tells us that being wise, and cunning, is always a better option than being aggressive, and violent..

"In martial arts situations involving large numbers, it is essential to agitate your opponents. It is essential that you attack violently when your opponents are not expecting it. Take advantage of the situation while their minds are unsettled, grasp the initiative and gain the victory." Miyamoto Musashi

In many wars, there are points where "subduing the enemy without fighting" is not possible. If the enemy is intent on causing your people harm, there is little to do other than defend those same people with violence.
