Default Improvising Self Defense Weapons

This is a thread for coming up with improvised weapons, either something to be used on-the-spot, or something put together beforehand.

To begin with, if you are proficient with nunchaku or flexible weapons, you can fashion something of the sort by splitting your keys into two rings and stretching a length of parachute cord or chain between them. While they may not carry much in the way of impact, they will add to your reach, rake your opponent, and likely be a big surprise.

My favourite has always been the parker pen.

Completely legal to carry but can be used as a general striking weapon, to hit pressure points with a more focussed blow or even use it for joint manipulation!

Parker Pen? Could you give a description? Unsure of what that is.

My favourite would be the belt most people wear them these days to work and going out to a bar etc but not many people think to use one as a weapon or to even defend great at long range and short range to tie your attacker up and some come with some big buckles if one of them hits you in the head after a full swing its going to hurt...

some schools of hapkido actually teach the belt as a weapon, they use a MA belt, but i am sure you could improvise.

Thank you, shirindo, for the link. My dad had one of those a long time ago. Really solid construction. Would definitely hurt.

Matayoshi kobudo teaches the use of flexible weapons, and aside from a belt, you can use a towel, a length of rope or chain, or anything else that fits the description "flexible".

Default Improvised Weapons

As mentioned previously, in my own self defence and martial art classes we have covered improvisations with every day items such as book (check out Bourne Ultimatum for an example) belts, umbrella, baseball caps, coins, wallets, pens, newspapers & magazines...pretty much whatever you can find, you can use

do you have techniques that you teach for each of these or do you brain storm as a class?

An underestimated weapon is a roll of coins.
The added weight in your fist can be devastating (with the added benefit of needing no training in any weapon. Just apply your normal martial-arts strikes), and they can be thrown in a pinch.
